We’re Hiring – Underwriting Analyst – Toronto

We are looking for an Underwriting Analyst to underwrite all mortgage product types and prepare detailed loan summary packages for the Senior Underwriting Team.  The successful candidate will be someone:

Underwriting Analyst Responsibilities

As Hillmount’s Underwriting Analyst, you will be responsible for:

  • Analyzing loan transactions on a qualitative and quantitative basis in order to underwrite and submit detailed loan summaries (which includes disciplined underwriting, thorough market research and transaction analysis) for management approval.
  • Performing modeling and quantitative analysis (i.e. for development or income-producing properties) in order to substantiate value and profitability of loan transactions.
  • Reviewing all applicants’ credit worthiness by performing a detailed analysis of personal net worth statements, financial statements, credit reports and other financial data relevant to the borrower and transaction.
  • Identifying risks and mitigations related to the loan transactions and the borrower and in time, making recommendations to management.
  • Preparing and issuing mortgage commitments and ensuring all required due diligence material is obtained and reviewed, and is consistent with preliminary underwriting, deal structure, and management approval and/or, where applicable, advising management of any material discrepancies.
  • Where required, performing site inspections and meeting with borrowers, property managers, appraisers, and other related stakeholders.
  • Building relationships with the brokers and borrowers to thoroughly understand their needs.
  • Corresponding with the borrowers, mortgage and real estate brokers, and other industry professionals to validate and further substantiate underwriting assumptions and gain a better understanding of particular markets and asset classes.
  • Working in collaboration with the Mortgage Fulfillment Team to ensure transactions are processed in a timely and efficient manner and meet funding deadlines.

Skills

  • Good analytical/mathematical skills that can be applied to analyzing lending opportunities.
  • Excellent communication (both written and verbal)/presentation, interpersonal skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational, time management and project coordination skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment but also able to work well independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to build and develop relationships with brokers, lawyers, borrowers and other with whom they interact.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is an Asset.

Education

  • Undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Finance, Commerce, or Real Estate.

Qualifications/Experience

  • 1 – 2 years of related work experience in the finance industry (experience in real estate is an asset but not a pre-requisite).
  • Knowledge and understanding of the real estate market and lending practices is an asset but not a prerequisite.
  • The candidate will either have or will be required to obtain their Mortgage Agent Licence.
